FREE Ways to Get your Website Noticed

get your website noticed

You’ve built your website and now it’s time to build traffic. There are many PAID ways to drive traffic to your site, but there are also a few FREE ways to get your website noticed. If you have more time than money, then here are a few ideas to help you attract more site visitors.

Build Relevant Content

Building relevant content is highly critical if you want to attract and keep people on your site. Consider utilizing your pages as well as your blog to create content that resonates with your target audience. Feature articles on your blog that share your expertise and knowledge on a topic, and offer whitepapers for download to build up leads. You can even create pod casts or videos that are of interest to your customers to keep them coming back and sharing your site with others.

Pay Attention to Analytics & Your Customers

After you have started building content, pay attention to what your visitors are reading on your site. You can use free tools like Google Analytics to monitor your site traffic. Look to see what content is generating the highest traffic and engagement. This will help guide you when creating new content. Make sure you keep content fresh and new so your audience will return and traffic will continue to grow.

Engage in Social Media

It’s important to note that social media only works if engagement is social, meaningful and authentic. What this means is you cannot expect great results if all you do is create an account and post or tweet out sales offers and news about your business. You should share information about your business, but you should also engage with the community. Become a part of the community, listen to what they are sharing, engage and respond to it. For example re-share what others post, if you see a message that is relevant to your business and what you do pay attention – you may be able to offer a solution or advice to the poster. If you hear a customer complaint about your services respond with an offer to make it right. If you hear someone promoting your company take the opportunity to thank them, and so-on. It’s an opportunity to engage with your peers, competition and customers. But be careful to keep it positive no matter what, and keep it authentic.

Promote an Offer or Sale

If you want to drive traffic to generate more leads then consider promoting an offer on your site. Offer a free consultation, a free gift with purchase, free shipping on orders over “X”, a free newsletter or whitepaper. Make sure the offer is relevant to your customer’s needs, and that it does not eat into your cost of sales. Keep in mind that you want to make the offer something of value to the customer in order to create a strong call to action, but that offer should be based on perceived value, not necessarily a monetary value.

Submit Your Site

Take the time to submit your site to major search engines and relevant directories. We often use for clients which is a paid service. However, you can submit your site for free but it will just take extra time. You can also get a basic business listing with many directories for free, and many offer an upgraded listing for a small fee. Do a little research and see what directories come up for your industry. Then take the time to create a basic business profile with a link to your website on as many directories as possible.

Submit & Share Your Content

After you have created content, an article, a video, etc. be sure to share it on your social media pages as well as to other sites. Find sites that write articles that are relevant to your target audience and find out how to add your content to their site. For example, on sites like Linkedin you can publish and tag articles right from your account. You can add a small snippet of text at the end of your article that links back to your website as well. Depending on your industry you could also consider posting your content on portfolio sites, with a link back to your site. The key is to think about other sites your customer may be searching or viewing, and then try to get your content on that site with a link back to your business website.

Optimize Your Site for Search Engines

It is very important to tag, describe and organize your content well on your website. This is not only important for user experience, but you also need to make sure your content is easily readable by search engines. This is crucial to your organic search engine efforts. Be sure you are using HTML tags, Meta tags and descriptions properly to improve the SEO on your website. This is a rather complex topic so take a look at the SEO/SEM section on our blog for more helpful tips that will get you headed in the right direction.

Promote it on Collateral

Digital marketing is alive and well, but traditional marketing is not dead, so do not rule it out! Make sure you add website and contact information to all your business collateral. Business cards, advertisements, brochures, flyers, press releases and even email signatures. The goal is to make it easy for your customer to find and contact you.

Remember, simply building a website is not enough. If you want to drive traffic and engagement on your website you need to put in the time to promote your website. Not spending the time and in some cases money, to properly market your website is no different than spending thousands of dollars on printed brochures that you never hand out. Like all important business operations, be sure to carve out some time to devote to your website. Your business will be better for it.
